Will Syldor, Americorps Volunteer, at Railroad Street Youth Project (RSYP), plus two youth representatives, Kaylyn and Sarah, met with Gregg and Bill yesterday. We agreed to have an AVP Intro late afternoon on a Tuesday (8th or 15th) in April. This will be a prelude to a full series of workshops in the next few months leading a cadre of young Facilitators. Luminous Laurie Scott has said she's willing and eager to lead. Interested in joining the team? Email Laurie ASAP!

Mid-Hudson Area Council (MHAC), AVP, has coordinated efforts in
Poughkeepsie for many years, recently under the leadership of Robert Martin, CSW. They recently began youth-oriented AVP training in collaboration with Oakwood Friends School and Real Skills Network, Inc. Each Basic Workshop pairs a group of Oakwood students with an equal number of Real Skills participants. (http://www.realskillsnetwork.org/contact-us.php) in the Poughkeepsie Partnership Health Center (a central city location). MHAC will invite the Tricorner group to the next meeting to hear our ideas and to begin coordinating efforts. Bill has forwarded the email addresses to Robert Martin, Clerk, to do the invitation. Source: The World Peace Prayer Society blog. During Fall 2013 people from Northwest Connecticut, Southwest Massachusetts and adjoining New York State have attended three workshops in both physical and verbal nonviolence at The World Peace Sanctuary in Wassaic, NY. These workshops jointly were sponsored by Urban Visions (Ancramdale, NY) and the Watershed Center (Millerton, NY), for the Training of Facilitators of the Alternatives to Violence Project (“AVP”). Our Tri-corner area for the first time has a cadre of local Facilitators to provide AVP workshops in our communities. AVP has provided verbal nonviolence training world-wide since it began in Dutchess County, NY in 1975. Urban Visions’ physical nonviolence training, “I-Key Workshops,” emphasizes how to use the body to communicate well and resolve conflict. The workshops grew out of AVP and the nonviolent martial art, “Aikido,” in 1985, then became a basis for Peace Dojos which provide ongoing nonviolence training that combines word and movement. |
